Visiting Drayton Hall is a quiet, contemplative experience. There is no period furniture — the rooms are empty, intentionally, so you can see the architecture itself: the original plasterwork ceilings, the hand-carved mantelpieces, the centuries of paint layers and worn wood. The grounds along the Ashley River include the African American Cemetery (one of the oldest documented in the country), the seven-mile Riverwalk, and ongoing archaeological work.

Drayton survived both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars largely intact when neighboring plantations burned, partly because the family converted the property to a hospital during the Civil War. Today the National Trust for Historic Preservation manages the site with a focus on conservation rather than recreation. If you've visited Magnolia and Middleton and want something quieter, more architectural, and more honest about the passage of time, Drayton Hall is essential.

What to Expect

Format

Guided 60-min house tour (timed entry) plus self-paced exploration of the grounds, African American Cemetery, and Riverwalk. Located on the Ashley River next to Middleton Place.

Best Time

Spring or fall for comfortable weather. The house has no climate control, so summer tours can be warm. Cooler mornings work best.

Duration

2-3 hours including the guided house tour and grounds exploration.

Tips

Reserve the house tour in advance — entry is timed and limited. Pair with Middleton Place (right next door) for a strong half-day. Bring water — the grounds are exposed and there's no café on site.

Travelers interested in architecture, preservation, or honest historical experience over heavily-restored grandeur.

Older kids interested in history will appreciate it. Younger kids may find the unfurnished house puzzling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Drayton Hall unfurnished?

The site is deliberately preserved rather than restored. Adding period furniture would require speculation about original placement; the empty rooms let visitors see the original architecture honestly.

How old is the house?

Construction began in 1738 and was completed around 1742. It is the oldest preserved plantation house in America and the oldest surviving example of Palladian Georgian architecture in the United States.

Why did Drayton Hall survive when other plantations burned?

The family converted the property to a smallpox hospital during the Civil War, which discouraged Union troops from torching it. It also survived the Revolutionary War largely intact.

Is Drayton Hall accessible for visitors with mobility issues?

The grounds are largely accessible. The historic house has stairs and uneven surfaces; call ahead to coordinate accommodations.
