Fort Sumter National Monument Tour

Take the ferry from Liberty Square out to the island fort where the Civil War began. Park rangers guide the on-site portion.

Fort Sumter sits in the middle of Charleston Harbor, accessible only by boat. The ferry ride alone is worth it — sweeping views of the Battery, Castle Pinckney, and Sullivan's Island as you cross. Once on the fort, you walk the ramparts where Confederate forces opened fire in April 1861. Allow about 2.25 hours round trip including the hour on the island.
